Should You Bother Yourself, Doctor?

Why bother with all that stuff?" This is the question that most doctors struggling with their private practice asked themselves.
<br />

<br />
The stuff of course is studying and learning effective marketing, staff hiring, training, and business plans, effective communications systems, insurance training, checklists, and manuals, compliance, software, records, plans, and so much more.
<br />

<br />
"How can I possibly get all that done, anyways? It's just not me."
<br />

<br />
"That will never work in my practice".
<br />

<br />
These comments and questions usually are bantered about when considering all that's needed to create a powerful practice. Worse yet, if we are not very careful, this kind of mindset can be a road to an owner doctors practice downslide, ultimate failure and considerable stress and unhappiness.
<br />

<br />
Sometimes, these kind of attitude starts way too early into a career. And I believe we just don't tell our students everything that private practice success will take. And frankly, some either make wrong choices, or change over time. Indeed, in our chosen field, especially in today's world, an exceptional practice is our ticket to an extraordinary life! And I don't just mean income. I am talking about all you will become to not only do this right, but also look forward to it day in and day out.
<br />

<br />
Let's be honest, both to ourselves and our students. Owning a practice is not for everyone.
<br />

<br />
Some doctors are just better off working in a hospital than having their own practice while others are simply not ready. And certainly, this can be the best choice for some doctors. It can allow you employee hours and benefits, lack of major headaches, a steady paycheck and certain time freedoms, etc.
<br />

<br />
As an employee, you can apprentice, and can also be a huge asset to those that need associate doctors. Then, you can choose to move into your own practice.
<br />

<br />
But, most of us in chiropractic have chosen to end up and stay in private practice for ourselves. Despite all the 'stuff ', we still have a huge desire to go for it, and all the rewards it can bring.
<br />

<br />
And that's to whom this article is dedicated.
<br />

<br />
Remember, practicing in this way is a conscious choice. The real fact is that the private practice of today requires considerable entrepreneurial skill and aspiration including the desire to be your own boss. To take control of your own destiny, work hours and lifestyle.
<br />

<br />
The price of your success includes mastering and continuing to improve upon this stuff. And in agreeing with yourself to do all you can to foster independence, you become totally unemployable by anybody else.
<br />

<br />
No, it's not always pleasant, nor necessarily easy. It's not a popularity contest either. You and you alone get to make and answer for all the tough decisions. From hiring to firing people, promoting and marketing your practice, and the entire gamut.
<br />

<br />
But in my opinion, the rewards are immeasurable.
<br />

<br />
The problem though, not only is practice now much more complicated and filled with details, but so is the environment in which we practice.
<br />

<br />
You see 100 plus years ago, kind, successful people paved a path for us. Some even went to jail for their beliefs regarding the freedom of patients to choose what's right for them.
<br />

<br />
And now, so much of our world has changed. What once worked very well in one area of practice is now obsolete, non-compliant or simply outdated. Systems and procedures fail that a few short years ago were phenomenally effective. Doctors who once had booming practices fail, or worse yet, new doctors never get a foothold.
<br />

<br />
The good news is you can learn new skills and master new procedures.
<br />

<br />
Join conferences and events that can impact you permanently in a positive way. There are a mix of clinically powerful and practice building strategies assembled together to help doctors look at their practice in a new way. I can still remember some of the life changing decisions that I've made during or right after I've attended an event like this. Don't miss your change. You may very well receive the breakthrough you have been looking for.

Laser Treatment for Gum Disease (Page 1 of 2)

As a retired veterinarian, Dr. Jim Davis knew about the perils of periodontal (gum) disease and the painful surgery to treat it in his four-legged patients.<BR/><BR/> So he wasn't too thrilled when Huntsville periodontist Dr. Paul Weeks recommended periodontal surgery last year.<BR/><BR/> "I had done lots of gum work on dogs and understand how it (surgery) works," said Davis, also a retired U.S. Army colonel and founder of a defense contractor company, Davis Strategic Innovations (DSI). "I was very reluctant to have it done because you remove a lot of the gum and my wife said I would look like a horse."<BR/><BR/> Not wanting to resemble one of his former patients, Davis put off Weeks' recommendation for surgery. But earlier this year during a visit to Weeks' office, Davis learned about a new technique to treat periodontal disease - Laser Assisted New Attachment Program (LANAP) developed by Millennium Dental Technologies.<BR/><BR/> It is used to remove diseased tissue without cutting or stitching of the gums. It is recommended by the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and the only FDA-approved laser therapy for periodontal surgery.<BR/><BR/> "I researched it and it sounded good except for having to be on a liquid diet for a month," said Davis, who had the laser surgery performed in February. "So far, it's doing real well and I can tell my gums aren't as inflamed. But it will be a year before we know for certain whether it worked."<BR/><BR/> Weeks, who has been in practice here for three decades, is believed to be the only local periodontist using the new laser surgery. The technology has been around for about 15 years, but only recently perfected to where Weeks will recommend it to some of his patients.<BR/><BR/> "Right now, I'm just picking and choosing which patients I recommend for it," said Weeks, who also uses the conventional, albeit more painful, method of removing parts of gum tissue in his patients. "Some are not a candidate (for laser surgery). We will not really know the results for a year or so, and I hesitate to recommend something that I'm not completely certain will work. But so far it seems to be going well."<BR/><BR/> After hearing other periodontists he respected talk about the success they were having with the laser procedure, Weeks researched it and decided to take the plunge. He spent three days training at the University of Colorado at Denver under Dr. Ray Yukna who has perfected the laser technique. Weeks has performed the laser surgery on "about two dozen" patients in the past six months, including Davis. Weeks believes laser surgery will eventually be the only method of treatment for periodontal disease, but probably not anytime soon.<BR/><BR/> The U.S. Surgeon General says the condition affects 85 percent of American adults 18 and older, and moderate to severe forms of gum disease affects 75 percent of the adult population.<BR/><BR/> Laser technology isn't cheap. One laser tool cost Weeks $160,000, plus $10,000 for a one-year warranty. It is also more tedious than the conventional surgery, so the procedure costs a little more and varies with each patient.

Don't Want to Relax Alone? Get a 2 Person Infrared Sauna

If you've looked into purchasing an infrared sauna, then you've more than likely seen the most common kind of model out there: the cabin. But did you know that you can buy a 2 person infrared sauna? Essentially it's a sauna that you can sit in with someone else, so that when you relax you don't have to be alone.<BR/><BR/>Going to a spa or sauna is always relaxing, but sometimes (or all of the time) it's not so fun to be alone. Traditional Finnish saunas allow more than one person, and finally infrared saunas can fit more than one person to relax and enjoy themselves. No one ever said that relaxing had to be a one-person affair. Now you and a family member, partner, or friend can relax together. Two is better than one, and if two are in the sauna the more likely you are to stay inside longer and reap more benefits. There is a downside, though: They are quite expensive.<BR/><BR/>These 2 person infrared saunas are simply bigger to accommodate the extra person, and a bigger sauna means more money. A single person infrared spa is expensive enough on its own. A sauna doubled in size can mean twice the price in some situations. So while being able to get the sauna experience with a loved one is a fantastic concept, actually reaching it can be very difficult.<BR/><BR/>If the price doesn't deter you, then by all means go for that infrared sauna. In the past there was no way for two people to share the infrared sauna experience, but with new technology come new opportunities. Now not only you can detoxify, relax, and increase your blood flow -- now you can do it with someone and enjoy yourself more than you did before. Sitting in a sauna alone can be a bit boring, making you get out early and not maximize the health potential you could be getting through sitting in the infrared sauna. Really the only reason to not purchase a 2 person infrared sauna is the price, and many sellers provide payment plans.<BR/><BR/>If you have been teetering on getting an infrared sauna but the concept of spending so much money on something that you couldn't share with someone else and get the maximum amount of fun out of deterred you, then going for a 2 person infrared sauna is a no-brainer. And with infrared saunas cheaper than ever you can get one that can accommodate you and the person you want to relax with at a price much lower than you looked at before. For anyone who wants an infrared sauna and does not live alone or have no friends, a 2 person infrared sauna is the way to go.

Strength Training Will Tone Dem Bones

Not so long ago, the idea of reaching middle age seemed daunting as you were considered to be "over the hill". People between ages 40 and 60 were expected to abandon youthful pursuits and start winding down their activities ready for the rocking chair. These days, thanks to increased knowledge about exercise and nutrition the prevailing wisdom is that the bar defining middle age has risen.<BR/><BR/>For many people, age 50 has become the new 40. But the midlife crisis for bone health comes a lot sooner; typically hitting its victim between the ages of 25 and 30, when the body stops building bone and bone density begins to slowly decline, leading to increased risk for breakage.<BR/><BR/>Osteoporosis a disease where the bones become fragile and break easily is one of the world's most devastating and common chronic diseases. Over 200 million people worldwide have some level of the disease causing a rising silent epidemic of hip, vertebra, wrist and other osteoporosis related fractures each year.<BR/><BR/>It strikes one in two women over 50 (more than breast cancer) and one in five men (more than prostate cancer} worldwide. These at risk people are expected to sustain at least one fracture in their lifetime. Each year in the US alone, $20 billion is spent to treat these fractures and by the year 2020 experts predict the cost will exceed $60 billion.<BR/><BR/>Advertisers spend millions driving home the message you need more calcium for stronger bones and supermarket shelves are loaded with a confusing array of calcium supplements. Yet will any of these calcium pills really help your bones?<BR/><BR/>The US, England, and Sweden have completed seven long-term population studies that do not show reductions in the risk of broken bones with increasing calcium intake. So are we to believe that calcium is the most popular pill that we don't need? Is it a concept all about making money and not strengthening our bones?<BR/><BR/>Bone health should be given top priority. Yet, a mere 10% of the nearly $20 billion in annual costs associated with osteoporosis - the bone-weakening disease that often leaves fractures and disability in its wake- is spent on prevention in the US.<BR/><BR/>Fortunately for all of us, however, simple steps can easily optimize bone health throughout our lives and the most important is - starting a proper exercise regimen. Because bone is living tissue, which renews itself continuously, it requires regular stimulation from vigorous physical activity. Like muscles, bones should be used regularly or they will weaken and deteriorate.<BR/><BR/>Without intervention on our part we begin to lose muscle mass and strength from our mid 20's on. As muscles and bones work together hand in hand, when we lose one we also lose the other. One of the most effective ways to reduce the stress on our weakening bones is to increase our muscle strength with strength training exercise.<BR/><BR/>Doing this type of exercise signals the body to stimulate bone formation to strengthen and rebuild bones in response to the increased resistance from the muscles being exercised. Such activity also builds muscle strength, coordination and balance, which can help prevent falls and related fractures.<BR/><BR/>No matter what your age with proper strength training exercise, nearly anyone can delay or even prevent their skeleton from ever becoming middle-aged.

Maximizing Your Muscle Gains - The Basics For Hard Gainers

All weight trainers/body builders want to gain the knowledge so they can then know the easiest ways to maximise their muscle gains. The following article will give you a basic understanding of how to use your time in the gym, and what you should be eating.
<br />

<br />
Training for maximum muscle gains
<br />

<br />
To get your body in an anabolic state that is needed in order to help your muscles grow you need to train your largest muscles. These are trained with exercises such as squats, dead-lifts and pull ups, and these exercises get used the least amongst most gym users.
<br />

<br />
These exercises seem like hard work for a lot of gym users so they get the least attention. Most weight lifters focus on their show muscles such as biceps so they end up over training these muscles and under training the major muscles groups.
<br />

<br />
The smaller muscles get a workout when you train the larger muscles so they don't need such a hard workout as the major muscles. It's easy to over train them so your progress can go backwards which for many gym users causes them to train these muscles even more. This results in even lesser gains than expected
<br />

<br />
Your diet
<br />

<br />
Your diet needs to consist of a balance of protein, carbs and fat. Fats are a food that are neglected, but it needs to be eaten for the human body to function properly. This is even more so when you're regularly training in the gym. All you need to do is eat more of the healthy fats such as omega 3's, and try and avoid saturated fats.
<br />

<br />
Carbs are also an important ingredient in making your muscles grow. They provide your muscles with the fuel they need for a proper workout, and they also aid in the recovery of torn muscle fibres.
<br />

<br />
You should be eating 5 to 6 meals a day so your body is never in a starving state. Once your body has no food to use a s energy it will start breaking down your muscles. This is something that you don't need if you're trying to gain muscle mass, and it's even more important if you're a hard gainer.
<br />

<br />
Eating regularly throughout the day keeps your body in an anabolic state so your muscles are continually growing. Your muscles grow in the time between your workouts so it's important that you keep on feeding them.
<br />

<br />
Once you get the balance right for your training which is...
<br />

<br />
Sets and reps
<br />
Time in the gym
<br />
Balanced diet.
<br />
Recovery time
<br />

<br />
Get these right and you'll start getting the gains you've always wanted.

Exercises for Love Handles: The Muffin Top Is Dead

?Love handles? might sound like a cute pet name, but there?s nothing cutesy about belly bulge oozing over the waistline of your low-rise jeans.
<br />

<br />
It?s true that diet and regular exercise can help you lose the weight?and keep it off? but, the most important thing to note is that, there are specific things you can do to strengthen, tone, and smooth out those pesky problem areas on your body?and this includes exercises for removing love handles.
<br />

<br />
So, are you on the edge of your chair yet?
<br />

<br />
Great! There are some things you can do right away that will help you melt those love handles right off of your waistline.
<br />

<br />
First, do some light stretching to loosen up your body. Standing with your feet shoulder width apart?and your body relaxed?breathe in deep and raise your arms over your head. Exhale slowly while slowly bringing your arms down by your side. Repeat this exercise 10 times.
<br />

<br />
Next in the sequence, I want you to touch your toes. However, don?t just slump over to do it. Raise your arms above your head?palms facing front?breathe in deep, and as you exhale, lean over slowly and touch your toes. Be sure to keep your arms straight.
<br />

<br />
Next, inhale slowly and come back up, nice and slow, keeping your arms and spine straight. Repeat this exercise 10 times.
<br />

<br />
A good way to get your blood pumping?without doing a full cardio workout?is to do jumping jacks. 50 to 100 should be just enough to prepare your body for the love handles workout.
<br />

<br />
To begin, lie on the floor?preferably, on a soft rug, yoga mat, or even your favorite blanket because you don?t want to hurt your back on a hard floor. If that?s not necessary because your home is carpeted, at the very least, roll up a small towel and place it between the small of your back and the floor.
<br />

<br />
Lie facing the ceiling, with your arms out to your sides at shoulder height - so your body makes a T. Without bending your knees, lift one of your legs up as far as you can, and then bring it across your body.
<br />

<br />
Keeping as much as of your body on the floor as possible while trying to touch your foot on the floor. This is a nice slow exercise, so there is no need to rush it. Repeat this 20 to 25 times?alternating legs each time.
<br />

<br />
With all of the hoopla and fanfare surrounding sit-ups, you?d think that they would be the perfect exercise for love handles, but the reality is that they only strengthen your abs. What you really want to do are crunch twists.
<br />

<br />
Lie on the floor as if you?re going to do a sit-up. Raise both your legs off the floor, keeping them straight. Raise your head with your hands unclasped behind it, and then bring your leg in toward you while touching your opposite elbow with your knee. Repeat 25 times, working up to 50.
<br />

<br />
Another good love handles exercise is the torso twist. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and your arms stretched out to the sides, nice and high, shoulder height, with your elbows bent.
<br />

<br />
Then twist to each side, punching out with each hand (i.e., you turn to the right and punch your left hand; to the left, it?s your right hand that punches). Repeat 100 times.
<br />

<br />
Of course, these exercises for love handles should be combined with weight training, diet, and cardio workouts to get the full effect. Do this and you?re well on your way to shedding the love handles.
